How many of you have ever stood at the base of a mountain and looked up?
Last month I was able to do this and I finally got a true glimpse of how huge a mountain wall can be.
For some of you this week the walls you are looking up at are mountain walls they are the walls of an obstacle you just can’t seem to overcome. We all face obstacles in our lives. You may be facing sickness, or death, or financial crisis. Your wall may be a relationship that you can’t repair no matter how hard you try, or it could be a vice you can’t conquer. For others the wall is your schedule (you just can’t seem to get as much done as you need to.)
There was a man named Joshua who faced a literal wall in his life as he tried to bring his followers into the promised land.
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:13-15 KJV)
Jericho was so big they had chariot races on its walls and Joshua had an army made of slaves and farmers! Looking at this wall I’m sure he felt like we do on days like this. There was no way he could break through this wall!
But then Jesus shows up and changes everything!
Jesus told Joshua to do something amazing! Something very difficult for people like me and I’m guessing people like you.
Jesus told Joshua to take his shoes off!
I know, you expected more, and so did I when I read this. I thought for sure that Jesus would tell Joshua to tunnel under the wall or build a tank to smash through the wall something more complex, more difficult.
But the truth is what Jesus told Joshua to do was probably the most difficult thing to do!
That is what Jesus said to Joshua
I got this
And therein lies the secret to getting past the walls we run into. Letting go! It’s so difficult for me to do I am a bit of a control freak but as soon as Joshua obeys Jesus the walls come down!
What do you guys think? What walls do you face?
